How Plasma TV Work
The old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) of the past is being replaced with two new innovative technologies; the Plasma tv and the LCD tv. These Plasma and LCD televisions have wide screens, comparable to the largest CRT sets, but they are less than 8 inches thick. Information in the video signal tells the displays to light up thousands of tiny fluorescent lights with a high-energy current of electrons. Each dot or pixel on the screen is made of three colors; red, green and blue. These dots cover and are evenly distributed on the face of the screen. By combining these colors in different proportions, the Plasma display can produce the entire color spectrum.
The central element in each red, green or blue fluorescent light is a plasma, a gas made up of free-flowing electrically charged particles called ions. An ion is an atom that has been separated from its electrons (negatively charged particles). Under normal conditions, a gas is mainly made up of uncharged atoms (equal numbers of protons and electrons with the electrons circling the center of the atom).
When a high voltage is applied through the atom, the electrons separate from the centeral part of the atom creating the ions, the plasma and the light.
